Vintage Capital in Frictional Labor Markets∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
Does capital-embodied technological change play an important role in shaping labor market outcomes? To address this question, we develop a model with vintage capital and search-matching frictions where irreversible investment in new vintages of capital creates heterogeneity in productivity among both vacant and matched firms. We demonstrate that capital-embodied technological change reduces labor demand and raises equilibrium unemployment and unemployment durations. In addition, the presence of labormarket regulation—we analyze unemployment benefits, payroll and income taxes, and firing costs—exacerbates these effects. Thus, the model is qualitatively consistent with some key features of the European labor market experience, relative to that of the United States: it features a sharper rise in unemployment and a sharper fall in the vacancy rate and the labor share. A calibrated version of our model suggests that this mechanism could explain a sizeable fraction of the observed differences between United States and Europe. ∗Krusell thanks the NSF and Violante thanks the CV Starr Center for research support. متن کاملPUTTY - PUTTY , TWO - SECTOR , VINTAGE CAPITAL GROWTH MODELS Brett
Most growth models assume capital is homogeneous with regard to technology. This contradicts intuition and empirical evidence that the majority of technology is embodied in the capital stock. Berger (2001) showed that neoclassical vintage capital (embodied technology) and non-vintage capital (disembodied technology) models have different convergence rates, although identical steady state growth...
متن کاملAggregate implications of indivisible labor, incomplete markets, and labor market frictions
This paper analyzes a model that features frictions, an operative labor supply margin, and incomplete markets. We first provide analytic solutions to a benchmark model that includes indivisible labor and incomplete markets in the absence of trading frictions. We show that the steady state levels of aggregate hours and aggregate capital stock are identical to those obtained in the economy with e...
متن کاملModelling Capital in Matching Models: Implications for Unemployment Fluctuations
Analysis of the the standard labor-market matching model usually focuses on labor productivity as an important source business of cycles. A shortcoming of this model is that it cannot account for observed labor market fluctuations with aggregate labor productivity as the only shock in the economy. Yet analysis of this framework disregards another potentially important source of business cycle f...
متن کاملOn the Optimal Control of the Vintage Capital Growth Model with Endogenous Labour Supply
We prove that the introduction of endogenous indivisible labor supply into the vintage capital growth model does not rule out the turnpike and optimal permanent regime properties, notably the nonmonotonicity properties of optimal paths, inherent in this model.
